At the center of the exhibition, we find an historical 1974 work from French conceptual artist Daniel Buren. Here, Buren’s trademark stripes, which by this point had already emerged as the dominant motif in his practice, function like arrows. The repeating pattern calls attention not to itself, but instead gestures out towards the architecture that contains, the body that views, and the abstract forces that control.

Each of the surrounding works employ a kindred sense of visual economy in their approach to a subject that resists representation but remains present. They lean, hang, drip, hover, and obscure in a series of unwieldy disruptions.

Comprised of works by Daniel Buren, Sam Lewitt, Wilfredo Prieto, Charles Ray, Pamela Rosenkranz, and Joe Zorrilla the show includes one photograph, two paintings, and three sculptural works.

Daniel Buren (b. 1938) lives and works in France. Buren has been the subject of retrospectives at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2005) and the Centre Pompidou, Paris (2002). As a major figure within Conceptual Art he has exhibited his work extensively internationally, and his work is included in prestigious private and public collections worldwide.

Sam Lewitt (b. 1981) lives and works in New York. He is represented by Miguel Abreu Gallery in New York and by Galerie Daniel Buchholz in Berlin and Cologne. He recently had a solo exhibition at the CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco which will travel to Kunsthalle Basel in 2016.

Wilfredo Prieto (b. 1978) lives and works in Havana, Cuba. He is represented by Annet Gelink Gallery, Amsterdam, Nogueras Blanchard, Barcelona/Madrid, and Kurimanzutto, Mexico D.F. Prieto’s work has been exhibited extensively in international institutions and biennials. In 2008, he was the recipient of the  prestigious Cartier Prize.

Charles Ray (b. 1953) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. He is represented by Matthew Marks Gallery in Los Angeles and New York and has exhibited at Documenta IX (1992), Venice Biennales in 1993 and 2003, five Whitney Biennials, and  has had one-person museum exhibitions in Basel, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Milan, Bern, Vienna, and Oslo, among other cities.

Pamela Rosenkranz (b. 1979) lives and works in Zurich. She represented Switzerland in the 56th Venice Biennale. She is represented by Miguel Abreu in New York and Karma International in Zurich.

Joe Zorrilla (b. 1982) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. He is represented by Hannah Hoffman Gallery.
