Exhibition information

Exploded View / Dressing for Windows, is Elaine Cameron-Weir’s second solo exhibition at the gallery. It is on view simultaneously with Cameron-Weir’s inclusion in the 2022 Venice Biennale and follows her recent site-specific commission at SCAD Museum of Art.

 

In her artistic practice, Cameron-Weir questions the individual and collective conditions that shape our perceptions of the world. Her work is informed by belief systems from science and religion to industrial and military paradigms and the ways in which they influence how people seek and experience meaning. Cameron-Weir often incorporates objects and materials originally intended for practical use in these fields, recontextualizing the histories and connotations they have acquired.

 

Exploded View / Dressing for Windows contemplates the ways symbolic weight and false equivalencies come into play in the models we use to interpret and intuit our lived experience. Four of the works included are installed with Cameron-Weir’s signature pulley and counterweight configuration, allowing the artist to establish relationships between different objects through the schematics of measurement. The works present themselves as an instruction manual — a technical tool, rather than didactic or purely interpretive. Like a three-dimensional exploded view diagram, it clearly indexes each object in dialogue with the whole yet refuses a simplified narrative.

 

Florid Piggy Memories brought to you on the wing of the Common Ground Dove / Dressing for Lectern, the newest work in the show, serves as an encapsulation of the four other works. The case is full of obsolete Magic Lantern glass slides depicting a combination of mundane and violent imagery. The images in the slides are all related to war, religion or heavy industry- steel, construction, or stone quarries. Each slide is encased by a meticulously handcrafted frame. The twisted pewter of each hand-crafted frame looks as if something had exploded through it to create a spiky, kinetic, ornamental structure. The consistency in which each slide is arranged, similar to the pulley system employed throughout the other works, asks the question of what it means to treat the mundane and the violent with the same system of display.
